A CHICK’S GUIDE TO STUDYING ABROAD
If there is a single person whom absolutely no one would ever suspect to study abroad, that person is definitely… me. But come September, I will be boarding a plane to London, where I will be learning to navigate the Tube and#40;the transportation system, that isand#41; and better understand British English, and also where I hope I will fatefully run into Robert Pattinson or Daniel Radcliffe. Yep, I’m scared out of my mind. But at the same time, I couldn’t be more grateful for my sudden epiphany that this might be my one and only chance to travel before I gear up for the “real world.” So, Chicks, if you haven’t already considered spending a semester abroad, I suggest you start now! Why should I study abroad in the first place? Saint Augustine once said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” I’ve never heard a truer quote. Honestly, I’ve never been out of the US before, but I can’t believe how ignorant I was about the rest of the w [Read More]published November 24, 2010 at 6:01pm CST

FUN WITHOUT DRINKS: A CHICK’S GUIDE TO SAYING NO
Another stressful week is finally winding down. Between studying, writing papers, working out, going to club meetings, and catching up with friends, by the time the weekend rolls around, its time for a well deserved break. For many of us chicks, you might soon discover that a weekend in college most likely goes hand in hand with some form of drinking. By mid week, a buzz is starting to generate about what parties you have to attend and where you’ll be going to have a few drinks before you really start drinking. Of course letting your hair down and doing something just for the fun of it is a good thing every so often. You’re a college student; you’re allowed to work hard and play hard too. But, if your idea of a great, stress free weekend doesn’t include any kind of binge drinking, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Especially in the very beginning of college, it might seem like there is no other person on campus who wants to do anything but drink and party. USC WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS UCLA
Playing in front of 8,527 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum, a new NCAA Women’s Soccer regular season record, the USC Trojans defeated the UCLA Bruins by a score of 1-0. USC had not beaten UCLA in the regular season since 1998. Still, USC’s win over UCLA in the 2007 NCAA Final Four might overpower all of the Bruins’ wins. However, the Bruins dominate the all-time series with a 19-4-1 record. The game went scoreless until the 85th minute when Karter Haug received a pass from Morgan Morrow. Haug lofted the ball into the penalty area, where it bounced once and freshman midfielder Autumn Altamirano volleyed it over Sandiford to win the game. UCLA possessed the ball more than USC did, but were not able to finish off plays, like they have been doing a lot this year. USC fought on and#40;pun intendedand#41;, and created their own chances. Both teams ended the game with 11 shots, and both goalkeepers, Shelby Church for USC and Chante Sandiford for UCLA, finished the night with 3 saves ea [Read More]published October 25, 2010 at 7:18pm CDT
"JUST YOUR AVERAGE COLLEGE GIRL WHO'S PLAYED BALL WITH THE PRESIDENT" - GLAMOUR
Maya Moore was named to Glamour’s Top Ten College Women list. Although they describe the 10 women as “amazing women you haven’t heard of yet” and I’ve obviously heard of her, that’s a pretty cool honor! Here’s what they had to say about Maya: The Star Athlete Maya Moore, 21, University of Connecticut Her dream: “To win WNBA championships.” How she’s reaching for it: Moore led the Huskies in back-to-back undefeated seasons, helping set an NCAA Division I women’s basketball record of 78 consecutive wins. In 2009 her team was honored at the White House, where they shot hoops with President Obama. “We were in heels, and he had the home-court advantage, so we’d like a rematch,” she jokes. But Moore’s talent is serious: She was the first freshman in Big East basketball history—men’s or women’s—to be named Player of the Year. That’s not all: She mentors student athletes and maintains an impressive GPA. The moment that changed everyth [Read More]published September 8, 2010 at 8:09pm CDT

WHERE DID LADY VOLS COME FROM?
Well it came from a lady. Gloria Ray. She was the first female athletic director of women's sports at the University of Tennessee; a position she took over in 1977 after coaching women's tennis at UT. Here is what she said about creating the Lady Vols brand:"It was fun being in on the very beginning and coming up with the name, 'Lady Vols' which at that time was controversial. I came up with a bumper sticker that said, 'Lady Vols, too.' There was a fear that a women's team would hurt the football team, so we wanted to put out the message that it's Lady Vols, too, in addition to the men, not in place of the men." Still controversial--well maybe just among the people I hang with--but for different reasons of course. Then it was the mere existence of women's sports that was controversial, today it's having to differentiate them arguably in a way the makes them seem inferior. And as we all know now--nothing has hurt big-time football, certainly not women's sports.[I'm going tangential here [Read More]published August 27, 2010 at 4:46pm CDT
