The biggest names in high school and professional sports convened in Los Angeles today as Gatorade honored the top prep male and female athletes with the eighth annual High School Athlete of the Year awards.  Just yards from L.A. Power forward Chiney Ogwumike, who will join her sister at Stanford in the fall, was honored as the 2010 National Female High School Athlete of the Year.  Future Kentucky Wildcat Brandon Knight, a guard from Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest who averaged 31.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season for the Panthers, scooped up the male athlete of the year. SOME KATHRYN BIGELOW NEWS

Here’s why awards matter.  Kathryn Bigelow who we all know won the best director Oscar this year is receiving two different honors. Even though she has a distinguished body of work I doubt she would have gotten either had she not kicked butt on The Hurt Locker. First, she was elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The board of governors totals 43 people from all the branches in the Academy. She joins Martha Coolidge and Ed Zwick as representatives of the directing branch.  The directing branch is one of the only ones that has two women and a guy.  Maybe the two of them can get some more women into the directing branch of the Academy so that we will see more women nominated. This is progress. Bigelow will also be honored by The Museum of Modern Art in NYC on November 10, 2010, and in June 2011 the Museum will show a retrospective of her work. Here’s some info from the press release: As the first female director to garner direc [Read More]

FIRST WOMEN ELECTED TO HOCKEY HALL OF FAME

The Hockey Hall of Fame is no longer just for men. Hockey pioneers Cammi Granato and Angela James changed that on Tuesday when they became the first women elected to be enshrined in Toronto. Along with former NHL All-Star Dino Ciccarelli, Granato and James will go in as part of the players category during an induction ceremony in November. While women had always been eligible for induction, the Hall made it easier for them to be voted in when it established a women’s subcategory this year. Granato played on the U.S. women’s hockey team for 15 years and led the club to a gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Her brother, Tony, played and coached in the NHL.  Granato retired as international hockey’s all time leading women’s scorer. In official events, Granato played 54 games, scoring 54 goals and 96 points. She won one Olympic gold and one silver, as well as one World Championship gold and eight silver. “I dreamed of being in the NHL my entire life, and this certainly [Read More]

THE LILLY AWARDS — KRISTIN CHENOWETH’S STATEMENT

On Monday night a packed house gathered at Playwrights Horizons people in NYC to celebrate women working in theatre.  A bunch of people including playwrights Theresa Rebeck and Marsha Norman who call themselves the “Committee for the Recognition of Outstanding Women in Theater,” pulled together an awards ceremony in a couple of weeks to celebrate the great women working in the theatre who seem to constantly be overlooked at awards time. I’m going to do a longer piece next week for The Women’s Media Center on the awards, but I wanted to share Kristin Chenoweth’s statement on her award.  Rob Ashford read her statement because she was under the weather.  and#40;Chenoweth was overlooked this year for her performance in Promises, Promises.and#41; I’ve asked Rob to speak in a higher voice so it’s almost like I’m there. It of course kills me that I’m not. I’ve been out 2 shows with a trachea infection. Sucks! You see, when I was first told that I, along with Mary Rodgers [Read More]

This year a bunch of very high profile theatre writers and others decided that they were tired of women’s work being constantly unacknowledged, so they created The Lilly awards which will honor 17 women theater artists, as well as Mary Rodgers who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Awards, whose work has been produced in the past year in New York City. They call themselves the The Committee for Recognizing Women in Theater and#40;how much do you love that name?and#41; and include Julie Crosby, John Eisner, Gary Garrison, Tina Howe, Julia Jordan, Marsha Norman, Theresa Rebeck, Susan Rose, Tim Sanford and the Dramatists Guild of America which was created “out of a desire to celebrate the work of outstanding, successful and up-and-coming women playwrights, directors, designers and advocates in the theater.” They named the award for the amazing Lillian Hellman and#40;if you have not read any of her plays, you mustand#41; and here is one reason why this honor is most appropriate for Hellma [Read More]

OBAMA WELCOMES UCONN WOMEN’S TEAM TO WHITE HOUSE

President Barack Obama welcomed the University of Connecticut’s national champion women’s basketball team to the White House Monday, and it was a reunion for many of the players and the Prez. The UConn women won their second straight NCAA championship earlier this year, prompting the repeat invite to the White House. It was the seventh title for the program. The team, which just completed its second consecutive undefeated season, has not lost a game since Obama was elected president. Obama went so far as to call them the best team in all of sports last year, “by far.” During their trip to the White House last year, Obama invited the team for an impromptu basketball shooting contest on the White House basketball court, which the president won. No word if a rematch was planned for this year. As he did at their last meeting,  Obama mentioned he is thrilled his two athletic daughters have role models like the UConn players. “So, as your president, I commend you for s [Read More]
