This post is part of a series about the nomination of Judge Sotomayor for the Supreme Court.

Judge Sotomayor just concluded what has been estimated to be about 24 hours of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. It has been an impressive demonstration of her legal expertise on a wide array of subjects, comfort in her role as a judge, and patience as she was repeatedly asked virtually the same question by different Senators, round after round.

In many ways, her appearance was totally consistent with her judicial record. As many who have reviewed her overall legal record have concluded, Judge Sotomayor is methodical in her explanation of the facts, takes care to identify and adhere to established legal principles, and sticks to the specific issue in the particular case. Her testimony was the same.

Judge Sotomayor’s remarkable grounding in the law reflected her 17 years on the bench, her experience as a prosecutor, and her private practice representing commercial interests. Her familiarity with a wide variety of legal issues and diverse legal experiences have reinforced the open mind and fairness to all sides that her legal record demonstrates.

Judge Sotomayor’s confidence and ease throughout, including during very heated questioning, let alone repetitive questioning in the extreme, also showed she is a person with formidable endurance, focus, energy – and good humor. Qualities that will serve her and the country well as a Supreme Court justice.
