The Obamas hosted a country-music concert at the White House this past Tuesday night. Country luminaries such as Brad Paisley perched on simple stools atop a low stage, but the real star of the night was offstage, atop the First Lady’s newly bare neck: a gracefully swept-back bob. Never mind that a press person later revealed that the new look was only an updo, not a permanent crop. What I’m concerned about are the first stirrings of a very familiar phenomenon: Hairgate. Anyone old enough to remember Monica Lewinsky and Whitewater must remember the national frenzy that occurred—for years—over Hillary Clinton’s hair. Even today, it’s easy to count more than 40 separate styles since the former First Lady entered public life. When the ends were flipped out instead of in, Americans wondered, Was it something Bill said? When her stockpile of headbands came into the picture, we thought, Was it because her passion project on health-care reform was stalling?
