I grew up listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary–my sisters and I belting ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ dramatically in our kitchen on many a rainy afternoon. While an enduring obsession with sixties culture and folk music grew out of this, so did a lifelong admiration for Mary Travers, the magnetic, intense, immensely talented soul of one of the biggest folk acts of all time. Travers passed away yesterday, at 72. Check out this video–how incredible is she? She was a truly kick-ass lady; I know I’ll be raising a glass to her tonight, copying her magnificent head shake, and maybe shedding a tear to ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone.’ Read the excellent Times obit here , and check out my big sis’s tribute here . -Devan
