In the age of HDTV, DVDs, shows online, and iPods, it’s hardly a wonder that the reading of actual books has been on the decline. While the idea of chugging through a thick classic novel may seem daunting and uninteresting, I’ve compiled a top five countdown of those select few that should change your mind. After all, you chicks should be well-read, intelligent ladies; and having these titles under your belt will make you feel all the more classic.

5. The Age of Innocence

This sweeping romance by Edith Wharton takes place in the gilded reign of turn of the century New York Society. Written with a beautiful, sparkling style, you’ll find your heart aching for the tragedy of lost love.

4. East of Eden

Written by the late, great John Steinbeck, this novel will suck you in right from the start. Told as a parallel with the Adam & Eve story, Steinbeck follows a family line down through the generations of California, and the illustrious style will keep you hunkered down for days.

3. The Great Gatsby

Short, sweet, and everyone’s standby, Fitzgerald’s Gatsby is succinct in writing and dripping with diamonds from the Jazz Age. Do yourself a favor, read this lazy-days thriller and watch it all come crashing down.

2. The Awakening

Even shorter than Gatsby, Kate Chopin’s novel is an absolute must-read for young women. Banned at the time it was written for “risqué” subject matter, this heart-wrenching tale of a young woman’s journey to find herself, meaning, and love will have you so enthralled you’ll feel the beat of the waves on that passionate seashore.

1. Gone With the Wind

Well what can I say– I’m a Southern girl through and through. Even if you’re not, Margaret Mitchell’s classic has forever been considered one of the best of the American Canon for a reason-it’s spectacular! Be not afraid of the sizable text, for the easy writing style of Ms. Mitchell combined with the unfaded drama and glory of the Civil War, and love in the time of it, are unmatched in their breadth and marvel.
