Can Heather Graham Sell the Public Option?

A new TV ad produced by MoveOn.com and starring Heather Graham seeks to make the case for the public option as a critical—and widely supported—component of health-care reform using a somewhat silly track-and-field conceit. “What does Heather Graham have to do with health-care reform?” you may ask. Not much, perhaps, but in this ad she plays the Public Option (that’s what the sign on her chest says), and how she does it says a lot about the goals of the pro-reform lobby. The ad depicts health-insurance companies as decadent dopes loafing around at the starting line of a race (it appears to be the 100-meter dash). Suddenly, they are caught off guard by the appearance of a new competitor, a glowing, graceful Heather Graham, who shows them up with her agility and speed. The voice-over narration explains:
