Women Are People Too ... Right?
by Judy Waxman, Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights, Since the beginning of the health care reform debate, it seems every Member of Congress has adopted the mantra, “People shouldn’t lose coverage under health care reform.” Well, I agree. And last I checked, women are people. But Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) doesn’t seem to agree. He’s threatening to offer an abortion coverage ban amendment to the Senate health care reform bill. Like the dangerous Stupak amendment, it would take away abortion coverage women currently have. That sounds like people losing coverage to me. How about you? Take our poll — and tell Senator Nelson that women are people, and we shouldn’t lose coverage under health care reform. Somehow, Senator Nelson doesn’t think so. And he’s working against health care reform that works for women. Just recently, he voted against the Women’s Health Amendment, which helps make sure key preventive health care for women is covered and affordable. And now he plans to offer this harmful anti-choice amendment that would take away coverage from women. Do you agree with Senator Nelson that only men qualify as “people”? If not, sign our petition urging him not to take away coverage from women. Thank you for your continuing efforts in this critical fight. Together we will achieve health care reform that works for women. |
