A couple of women, one veteran, Agnes Varda and one newcomer, Mai Iskander just got their first nominations for a DGA Award.

Iskander was nominated for Garbage Dreams about boys born into the “trash world” in Egypt which is now playing in NYC, and Varda for her The Beaches of Agnes which is a film memoir of her life.

So this year there are three women nominated for DGA Awards.  (Kathryn Bigelow got a nod for feature directing.)

Women have won the documentary award from the DGA, but a woman hasn’t won since 2004 when Byambasuren Davaa shared the award for The Story of the Weeping Camel and the last time a woman won on her own was 2002 when Tasha Oldham won for The Smith Family.
