How chicks can help Haiti

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti about 10 miles southwest of its capital, Port-au-Prince. It has left hundreds of thousands people dead, missing or injured. Buildings, including hospitals, schools and people’s homes, have been reduced to rubble. But we don’t have to tell you that.

There have been countless photos online and televised programs that show the damage much better than words ever could.

As you read this, multiple organizations are trying to provide medical assistance, shelter, food and basic needs to hundreds of thousands of people. They are trying to locate family members and friends who are still missing and reunite families that have been separated.

Although millions of dollars have already been raised, it will take millions more to help restore the country, one of the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.

At ChickSpeak want to help, so we’ve compiled a list of ways to offer assistance to the people of Haiti. Although you may wish to donate goods or volunteer, at this time, many organizations prefer you donate cash. The shipment of goods can be expensive, and by buying supplies in affected country, it also helps stimulate the local economy.

Volunteering in affected areas is often dangerous and although it is possible to volunteer, organizations prefer volunteers with previous disaster relief experience and technical expertise. (Although volunteering your time to raise money for Haiti is highly recommended and appreciated.)

Here are some ways to help:
