Got One of Ralph Lauren's Opening Ceremony Hats? You Could eBay It for $200

As Team U.S.A.’s first Olympic medalist, mogul skier Hannah Kearney, summed it up best when we saw her yesterday: “It’s been a good Olympics for swag,” she said. Ralph Lauren scored big time with its Vancouver Olympic Winter Games collection, which the fashion house gave to members of Team U.S.A. to sport during the opening and closing ceremonies: the alpine hat featuring the Canadian moose and an American flag was sold out online and in stores before the athletes walked into the stadium last Friday. We’ve heard that U.S. snowboarder Shaun White has been raving about all the Ralph Lauren the garb that he’s received, including the navy puffer jacket and the white turtleneck sweater. Ralph Lauren has become so synonymous with Team U.S.A. that when you’re walking around Vancouver sporting a large Polo pony, people think you are an athlete. “Kids have been asking me for my autograph because they think I’m an Olympian,” said David Lauren, who was wearing a navy knit Ralph Lauren sweater with a big Polo pony and combat boots when we met up with the Ralph Lauren senior vice president of advertising, marketing, and communications yesterday at the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver. In fact, one night out on the town, anonymous bar patrons bought a round of drinks for Lauren’s colleagues, who were sporting white Ralph Lauren puffer vests with big U.S.A. letters. (The vest is a must-have for walking around the Olympic Village—it’s the perfect piece for the balmy Vancouver temperature.) |
