“I’ve got some missions that nobody can see, and all of these emotions are pouring out of me, I bring them to the light for you, it’s only right.” This quotation is from Kid Cudi’s single ‘Soundtrack 2 My Life’ off of the album Man on the Moon.

Yielding from Cleveland, Ohio, with a backpack full of skills, rhymes, and new ideas the world of hip-hop hasn’t seen before, this artist is quickly becoming an obsession for many of his fans, creating music you can’t help but sing along to.

At a show in Los Angeles, C.A., performing along with Travis Barker, DJ A-Trak, Lil Jon, and Kid Sister, MTV.com writer Kelly Marino described the moment when Kid Cudi took the stage as the most excited of the night.

“When Kid Cudi took the stage, the crowd exploded. Performing “Pursuit of Happiness,” fans sang along at the top of their lungs while Cudi jumped around the entire stage, high-fiving fans lucky enough to be standing in front,” Marino said.

After one year studying film at the Universe of Toledo, Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi dropped out and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. to pursue his dream of making music inspired by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. After releasing a free mixtape with the clothing company 10.Deep, Mescudi caught the attention of Kanye West, was immediately signed to GOOD Music label, and became the highly talented and infamous Kid Cudi that blasts through our stereos today.

As one of the hands behind Kanye’s hit single ‘Heartless,’ it was clear before the release of Man on the Moon, Mescudi’s first full length album, that he was bringing something to the rap game that many fans, producers, and artists had not expected or experienced before. His skill for developing lyrics that an average person can relate to and rapping about his problems instead of his money has set him above the rest, creating music that people can listen to again and again. Collaborations with indie favorites such as Ratatat and MGMT make his sound a genre all of its own, and draws fans that normally wouldn’t pay as much attention to the hip-hop scene.

In addition to the contributions he has and will make to music, Mescudi also has an acting career. Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy How to Make it In America, which follows two young men in Brooklyn as they try to weave their threads into the fashion world, features Kid Cudi as Domingo, a friend who helps the guys with his high status in and know how. From the creators of the HBO classic Entourage, this show, as the New York Times put it in a past review, ‘takes a look at the guys form the neighborhood who haven’t left the neighborhood.’ (Read the full review here.

Whether you’re a fan of his music, his acting, or simply his ability to cross together artists and styles that normally don’t work together and prove that in actuality they can, Kid Cudi’s sound is something you can’t help but nod your head to. And further collaborations are on there way: it’s rumored that Cudi will be featured on a track on Snoop Dogg’s new album, as well as making new sounds with Young Money rapper Drake. Check out the music video to his top single ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ here, and don’t worry if you can’t help but stand up and dance the first time you hear it (we did, too).
