April Chick Picks
While it’s said April brings lots of showers in preparation for May’s flowers -at ChickSpeak, we think April is the first month where the sun shows its face, and therefore, is time to celebrate! With flowers (and allergies) abounding, the dream of summer love growing, and new spring lines of cosmetics and clothes debuting -April is the perfect month to get revved up for the beautiful season ahead. To give all of you chicks the sense of hope that only Springtime can bring, we give you our favorites for the month of April: April’s Accessories and Apparel I’m a chick that loves comfort. After a long day at work or in classes, I love going back to my room and putting some sweatpants on and that’s one of my favorite products in VS Pink, their sweats. The VS Pink line offers very comfy sweats in many different styles and my favorite is the ‘Boyfriend Pant’. If I could, I would have the whole collection!- Debora Biasutti, Travel and Food + Fetes writer
As the old adage says, “April showers bring May flowers.” One of the best ways to combat the spring rainy season is with a good pair of rain boots. DSW has one of the widest selections of rain boots for reasonable prices. The rain boots come in all kinds of cute designs including plaid, flowered, polka dotted, and monotone. -Erin Nerlino, Do It Yourself and Women’s Safety writer
I’ve always fancied myself a bit of a tough girl. Well, when it comes to fashion, at least. I’m not particularly big on paisley patterns or fancy shoes, which perfectly explains my obsession with Doc Marten’s. The punk-rock staples work well with virtually every outfit and always add the perfect amount of edge. And if they’re too edgy for you, you can always get them in pink. - Faithlynn Morris, Distractions and Tech Trends writer I walked into H&M last week, and thought I had entered a special kind of heaven, where floral prints, simple shapes, and vivid color reigned supreme. I was so delighted by this bright new H&M collection, I bought several pieces. I couldn’t argue with the decent prices! April brings showers (and one or two gloomy days), so why not celebrate Spring by wearing it? -Jasmin Charters, Social Media Manager Women’s Liberty of London For Target Poppy Rain Boots They say that April showers bring May flowers, but I don’t see why we can’t have flowers and battle the rain in style. Their sweet and colorful pattern is a classic spring color combination that will cheer you up on those gloomy gray days without being flashy, and at just under $30.00 it’s a fabulous - and practical - deal. -Daniella Gafen, Distractions and Beauty & Style writer Michael Kors Stainless Steel Leather Strap Watch I can’t go anywhere without a watch, even if I have a cell phone that is perfectly capable of telling time. A recent purchase I made (or rather a splurge) was this Michael Kors watch, and what I love about it is the comfortable leather band and the cute little MK charm that dangles from your wrist whenever you check the time. Unlike other watches that sometimes get way too complicated, it’s really easy to tell time, and I think it has a real classic feel that makes it timeless and perfect for any season. -Katherine J. Chen, Career + Finance and Distractions Writer, Art & Thought Columnist For the cost of a J. Crew flower applique tee you can buy multiple hand rolled silk flower pins from Pins and Needles Too. She has multiple silk colors available and the possibilities are endless! I bought two to pin on tees, jackets, dresses, headbands, you name it! -Lauren Jamison, Beyond the Honeymoon columnist This month, Liberty of London presents their limited edition Home + Fashion line for Target. The collection features bold, beautiful floral patterns evoking a since of Indian culture, and Target.com even features a personality quiz to find the pattern that fits you best. - Cady Childs, Beauty and Style Writer & Columnist North Face Masonic Hoodie
I always said I’d celebrate my 21st birthday, which falls in April, with a genuine designer bag. That all changed when I fell in love with a pair of 1940 Black Fine Haircell boots. These 14-count eyelet boots are great for the unpredictable April weather and look really cool to attend a screening of The Runaways. -Shannon Kirk, Travel and Distractions writer April’s Antique Reads The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett The 1993 film version of the Frances Hodgson Burnett book is my kryptonite. If it’s on TV, or I just “happen” upon my DVD copy, I can’t not watch it. It’s a beautifully made film, with stunning locations and of course, the irreplaceable, brilliant Maggie Smith. Plus, it’s ideal for shedding those winter blues and kick-starting that new beginning of yours, just as Mary Lennox, Dickon and Colin did. -Jasmin Charters, Social Media Manager
The Gospel According to Coco Chanel: Life Lessons from the World’s Most Elegant Woman by Karen Karbo I recently finished this book, and I can only say that it is a really refreshing and enlightening read. I know a lot of career guides and books today say that women can have it all (the family, the one true love, the successful career, the grand social life), but this book is just a breath of fresh air, proving that women do have to make sacrifices in order to achieve greatness but a balance between love and work is definitely possible. If you don’t believe me, take it from Coco Chanel, the woman who managed to change the face of fashion while having some of the hottest relationships in history. We can all learn a lot from Chanel’s failures, successes, and relationships. -Katherine J. Chen, Career + Finance and Distractions Writer, Art & Thought Columnist
April’s Appetite Husband and I recently signed up for an account with Earth Fare and so far we have received everything from free pizza to $1 Easter Lilies. You can’t beat the price of free for fresh organic food. Good for you and good for your wallet! - Lauren Jamison, Beyond the Honeymoon columnist
I’m not a huge fan of chocolate, however, I love, love, love the Cadbury creme egg. Its ooey, gooey center in my opinion is the best part. A lot of people like to bite off the top then eat the inside out of it. I, on the other hand, enjoy eating every part of the egg together in about three bites. It’s by far my favorite candy of the season. - Fatima Meadows, Food for Fitness columnist and Contributing Writer April’s Accents of Nature Growing up, I always anticipated the arrival of the daffodils in my grandmother’s flower bed. They seemed to just pop up everywhere, and were always so bright and fragrant. They are so easy pick, and a large bouquet wrapped in a napkin make a lovely addition to a dining room table. -Fatima Meadows, Food for Fitness columnist and Contributing Writer
Every summer, my grandparents’ yard is transformed into a beautiful garden laden with tasty vegetables. After much badgering, my Pop-Pop, the know-it-all of tomato gardening, taught my younger brother and I a quick bit of Gardening 101. Not only is gardening a great excuse to get active outside, but when summer hits, you’ll be bestowed with an awesome end product: food! Check out this comprehensive guide for growing tomatoes - but if you’re a little lazy, the Topsy Turvy Tomato Grower will do the same thing (really, doesn’t everyone secretly use As Seen on TV products for other stuff anyway?) -Maxine Frendel, Mind + Body and Relationships writer As a college student, and in my mind, still-growing child, I’ve found that the one thing I simply cannot find enough time for is sleep. I stay up late to finish all my work and write all my papers and then get up 4 or 5 hours later to make it to my lectures the next day — it’s a cycle I can’t seem to make any sense of. But I have found one way to get around my lacking night-time circadian rhythms - naps during the day. And now that the weather is nicer outside, I can take naps, well, anywhere. - Faithlynn Morris, Distractions and Tech Trends writer April’s Astonishing Beauty I love perfume, and could spend hours smelling every perfume at Sephora before making a decision. I tried my latest fave when I was waiting in line to pay for eyeshadow, and am putting it on my birthday wish-list ASAP. It’s an uplifitng combination of 7 different flower scents on a base of patchouli that will make you think you’re in your own secret garden. -Daniella Gafen, Distractions and Beauty & Style writer Burt’s Bees Natural Toothpaste I’ve been a huge fan of Burt’s Bees since college -something about the line is so easy, so fresh and so good for you. I recently tried their new toothpaste, and I can’t get enough of it! It’s not super spicy like some toothpaste brands, but it leaves your mouth feeling clean and fresh. Plus, it’s natural -what else could be better? -Lindsay Tigar, Editor-at-Large
Dr. Scholl’s For Her Rough Skin Eraser Living in New York City, my feet get really gross. Yeah, it’s probably not very lady-like for me to admit it, but my feet can literally be black after walking around all day -with shoes on. No joke. This also makes them rough and irritable. With this rough skin eraser, you simply rub your feet with it, wait a hot minute, and then rub off the dead skin. It’s like magic. My feet feel soft and clean, and ready to go right back out and get dirty again! -Lindsay Tigar, Editor-at-Large April’s Voice and Entertainment Lungs by Florence + the Machine Every Spring, a new soundtrack to blast in your car with the windows down and the breeze blowing through your air is necessity. Florence + the Machine’s debut album Lungs, released in 2009, is hitting sound waves with quite a frequency as their popularity grows exponentially. Yielding from the UK, their sound is a melting pot of various influences. Songs like ‘Dog Days are Over’ and ‘Kiss with a Fist’ combine reminiscent qualities of Adele and Bjork for a great, building beat behind an incredible, powerful voice. - Cady Childs, Beauty and Style Writer & Columnist I’m kind of obsessed with the CBGB/punk scene of the 1970s and 1980s and anything that has to do with chicks taking on a man’s world. The Runaways, the new bio-pic about Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherrie Currie (Dakota Fanning), has both, complete with an awesome soundtrack. What more can punk-loving chick ask for? -Shannon Kirk, Travel and Distractions writer Raunchiest movie ever? Yes. Completely scandalous? Of course. Nevertheless, this all-American classic is still a favorite on my Netflix list almost a year since it left the big screen. Pop some popcorn and throw this into the DVD player on the next rainy day…but leave young ones at home. (You’ll know what I mean when you see it. There’s only room for one baby in The Hangover, and that’s Carlos.) -Maxine Frendel, Mind + Body and Relationships writer
