Cannes Can’t – Where are the Women Directors?
So the Cannes lineup in finalized and the abysmal showing for female directors is now set in stone. The festival added two more films to the competition lineup and not surprisingly, both were by men. That’s now 18 films competing for the Palme D’Or and not a single film directed by a woman. I heard some rumblings last week via my site that women directors are pissed off. And you know what, they should be. This is the 21st century and I find it extremely hard to believe that the good folks at Cannes could not find one or two films by a female director to include in the competition. I hope that the rumors of a protest from female directors is true. I’m seriously tempted to start my own online protest in solidarity with the female directors working around the world who can’t get paid attention to. This is such bullshit. If anyone knows of protests going on (or if anyone wants to organize something with me) get in touch. We need to speak out about this. So much for the Bigelow effect. We are still going backwards.
