Obama welcomes UConn women’s team to White House
President Barack Obama welcomed the University of Connecticut’s national champion women’s basketball team to the White House Monday, and it was a reunion for many of the players and the Prez. The UConn women won their second straight NCAA championship earlier this year, prompting the repeat invite to the White House. It was the seventh title for the program. The team, which just completed its second consecutive undefeated season, has not lost a game since Obama was elected president. Obama went so far as to call them the best team in all of sports last year, “by far.” During their trip to the White House last year, Obama invited the team for an impromptu basketball shooting contest on the White House basketball court, which the president won. No word if a rematch was planned for this year. As he did at their last meeting, Obama mentioned he is thrilled his two athletic daughters have role models like the UConn players.
It has become customary for the sitting President to meet with the championship teams from most college and professional sports. And to put their domination of college athletics into perspective, the the UConn women have met with Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The Huskies will start next season with their 78-game winning streak intact and could very well find themselves with a another invitation to the White House next May. |
