Room for Improvement
No women nominated for director of a comedy; or director of a variety, music or comedy series; or director of a mini-series, movie or dramatic special.
Thank goodness for Tina Fey and 30 Rock or else no women would have been nominated in comedy writing.
Here are some of the responses from some of the female nominees:
Nurse Jackie co-creators Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem From Variety:
Liz Brixius: The thing that’s most exciting is that two years ago we were asked to do a show for Edie Falco, and we wanted to do the best possible show for Edie Falco. With Edie getting nominated, we feel like we didn’t let her down. It’s also exciting that so many nominations went to people behind the scenes who do astonishing work and contribute to the overall quality of the show.
Linda Wallem: I’m hoping we get a chance at the Heisman.
Glenn Close in USA Today:
Close acknowledged the show’s writers. “I wouldn’t be here if not for the words they put into my mouth. They kept me engaged. I think what scared me most about doing a series was that I’d get bored. … I have to say every season has been more and more of an exploration.”
Edie Falco in Variety
“Working on ‘Nurse Jackie’ has been a joy from the get-go. I’m beyond thrilled that people are enjoying it and noticing it as well. It’s an embarrassment of riches.”
Connie Britton in the LA Times
It’s so gratifying because we have just been fortunate on this show regardless,” Britton said. “We’ve had such amazing support from fans and critics — the fact that that never translated to Emmy noms for the show was something we never really understood. It’s satisfying enough that the people who are watching it are enjoying it. That’s the true measure of success. With Kyle and I both nominated, it’s almost like the whole show being recognized.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus to EW
Yeah. I’m just delighted with the Academy and less so with CBS. Today is a great day because it is very affirming, and it makes me feel better than yesterday. It’s incredible to be nominated, and it was just a shame that—well, I don’t know—CBS really squandered our show; that’s the reality.
The Emmys will be handed out on August 29th.
