Affordable Care Act Helps Women Except That...

Writing regarding current women's issues, sports analysis and commentary, with a dash of political posturing!

This is according to a story linked on DailyKos.com , via a Web MD story on a new Commonwealth Fund Study. (PDF)

About 7.3 million women aged 19 to 64 were turned down when they tried to buy an insurance plan, charged a higher rate than men, or had a pre-existing condition excluded when they tried to buy in, she says.

Except that women are regularly denied coverage of birth control, while men are regularly allowed coverage of Viagra. Except that women are regularly denied health services because they are not considered "high risk" (ie heart problems). Except that women that qualify for the high risk insurance pools, can't even buy their own abortion coverage plan.

No way to dress it up, women still don't get fair coverage, in an age that is supposedly post-feminism, post-gender and progressive. If anything, the way  women were thrown under the bus during the healthcare insurance reform battle, was proof that for the most part, politicians don't give a shit about women's right to autonomy over their reproductive organs.

ACA is good, it will help many people, but this study is borderline propaganda. I don't think it is a coincidence that it has been released 3 days after President Obama announced renewed restrictions on abortion services. Women are still not getting fair and equal coverage. Pretending otherwise is bullshit.
