BlogHer'10 - Women in Sports Panel
Re-capping BLOGHER '10
Driving into New York City this weekend for the BlogHer event was definately something I was looking forward to participating in. I honestly didnt know exactly what to expect, but I felt as though bringing a professional atheltes perspective to a women in sports panel was a great opportunity. Here is a small recap on some of the issues brought up during our panel... -equality and the differences in how men and women are treated in various sports -how parents influence a child's life growing up, both positively and negatively -homophobia in women's sports -media coverage on women's professional sports -how athletes mature and adjust from the high school level, collegiately, and professionally and amidst all those conversations, I felt the interaction between the speakers and the audience went really well. I didn't expect the hour and a half to go by so quickly. (Also, I thought it was pretty neat the ovation and excitedness I received, sharing my Mercury championship ring :)). It was really neat to be around so many women that are so passionate about what they do, and how to make a difference. I think as an athlete, you don't realize the amount of "other" things that are happening off the court, especially all the journalists and writers that are fighting to get the word out about women, sports, controversial issues, etc. Having this time away from the sport has truly opened my eyes to how far "we" have come, and how far we still have to go. |
