Halle Berry Gets Back to Work (and Covers Vogue)

Halle Berry hasn’t been in a movie in several years, hasn’t done an interview in over three, yet she could not resist the call that came in to be on the cover of September’s Vogue.

Halle is the first woman of color to be on the cover of a September issue of Vogue in over 20 years since Naomi Campbell was on the cover.

Here’s what she said about why she did it:

What that means for a woman of color and what that means in the fashion world, what that means to pop culture, there was no way I could say, No, I’m not going to be on the biggest issue of the year.

Now, she’s getting back to work. She’s about to shoot a thriller Dark Tide in South Africa. She has an indie film Frankie and Alice coming out in October “about a stripper (from the ‘hood) who suffers from multiple-personality disorder” which is set in the 70s. The film is directed by Geoffrey Sax who directed the British film Tipping the Velvet based on Sarah Waters book.

She’s also going to make her Broadway debut next year in Katori Hall’s play The Mountaintop about Martin Luther King Jr. with Samuel L. Jackson.

I’m glad she is getting back to work. We need more African American women playing leads in films and on Broadway.

On another note, the Vogue article talked about how also spends a lot of time at the Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic-violence center in South L.A and renovates apartments for women who have been victims of domestic abuse.
