Lena Dunham gets HBO Pilot

Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture which made its debut at SWSX is a really great film.  I saw it a couple of weeks ago and loved it.  I’m not going to write too much about it here since it will be released in November, but it is smart and a breath of fresh air since it chronicles a young woman struggling to figure out what they hell to do with her life in that brief post college moment when the world vacillates between promise, fear and that crazy thing called reality.

So I was excited to read that Lena Dunham who wrote, starred in and directed Tiny Furniture just got a gig to direct the HBO pilot of her script about “about the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20′s.”

The bad news is that she has hooked up with the Darth Vader of comedy Judd Apatow who has done much to declare women unnecessary in big screen comedies.  I really hope that he is involved in name only.

I am also hesitant to get too excited because HBO has a BAD track record for shows about women.  Tilda, the Diane Keaton show is supposedly having major problem and lost the showrunner.  And they never made a pilot of Women’s Studies from Theresa Rebeck.

They are also about to let loose Martin Scorcese’s Boardwalk Empire on the world and there are very few women in the series.  HBO lists 15 characters on the webpage and 4 are women, and Gretchen Mol’s character doesn’t even have a last name.  But we all know that this series will be the second coming cause its from Martin Scorcese…but I digress.

Congrats to Lena.  She is really talented and only 24! But, I will be much happier when I read that the pilot gets picked up to series.
