A Chick’s Guide to Pampering Herself on a Tight Budget

I worked close to 32 hours a week this summer. That was on top of having two online internships and babysitting two days a week. Needless to say, I was a busy chick.

Pay day was always exciting until I thought about my expenses. There was gas, car insurance, the cell-phone bill, and pressure to pay back some of my student loan. Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry about rent, utilities, and credit card bills. But this isn’t the case for many chicks.

They’re on their own, working their butts off at jobs they may or may not love only to get a paycheck and watch it dwindle away once the mail rolls in. It’s life, but it’s not fair. Every chick deserves a good pampering once in a while so we’re here to make sure that happens.

Make Yourself Dinner

I’m not talking Mac and Cheese or grilling a burger. Subscribe to Stop and Shop’s circular, or another market near you, and keep your eyes out for deals. Don’t be fooled though, sales may look good but that’s not always true. Compare prices of steaks to that of other meat shops until you find the most reasonable price. Prep it the night before along with a vegetable or other side of your choice.

The following night, your meal shouldn’t take too long to cook but while it is, light some candles and dim the lights. You don’t need a man to set a mood like this. Throw on some Frank Sinatra, poor a nice glass of wine, and relax.

Take a Bath

Remember that bath set you got for the holiday’s last year and thought about throwing away? Use it! Start a warm bath and pour in some bubbles. Make a calming playlist on your iPod and let it echo within the walls of your bathroom.

Don’t have a bath? No problem. Raise the temperature of your shower just a little and lather yourself with that shower gel. The steamy water will work wonders on your body while calming scents like lavender or chamomile whisk you to a place far, far way.

Go to the Mall

No, not to shop. It may seem weird but go just so you can sit in one of the massage chairs that are often found in the middle of the mall. They’re cheap to use and a little mid-day pick me up never hurt anyone.

Utilize Your Man’s Strong Hands

Are you taken? Perfect. Convince your guy to put his hands to good use. You can order massage oils from Amazon for decently cheap prices. Once it comes in, tell your guy that if he gives you massage that makes you feel like a whole new woman, you’ll make it up to him later. It’s up to you how you’d like to do this but I suggest making it up to him in a way that’ll satisfy you both (Hey, this is about pampering you, isn’t it?).

Tune Out

Pick a day on the weekends for you. Turn off your cell-phone, log out of your e-mail, and be-rid yourself of any other technology. Let your brain repair itself from the week it was just faced with and get in touch with nature. Go for a walk if it’s nice outside or snuggle by the fire and read that book you’ve been dying to get to if it’s cool. It’s amazing what logging yourself of out of the Matrix can do.

You don’t need all the money in the world to pamper yourself. Sure, it helps but we’re not all heirs, authors, actresses, and singers, are we?

No, we’re hard working chicks who are more than entitled to a break. So show that paycheck who’s boss and use what you’ve got. That’s honestly all you need.

Chelsea Tirrell is a sophomore at Hofstra University. She’s constantly on the move but knows when it’s time to take a step back and stop for a while. It may drive her crazy to simply relax but her body thanks her for it later.
