Today is World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day. Last year nearly a half million babies were born with HIV. More than 33 million people worldwide were living with HIV. That's up from 26.2 million in 1999. Despite that staggering statistic,AIDS organizations are making progress in their efforts to control and eventually eradicate HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day is a chance to take stock of how well these organizations are doing and where the world stands today.

According to the 2010 report from UNAIDS, the United Nations' HIV/AIDS program, the overall HIV infection rate has declined almost 20 percent in 10 years – from 3.1 million new cases in 1999 to 2.6 million in 2009. That decrease follows decades of explosive growth in the number of HIV infections.

World AIDS Day is a day when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. This year marks the 21st anniversary of World AIDS Day with the theme of “Universal Access and Human Rights.” The human rights approach is comprehensive, tying directly into the response needed for universal access to treatment, prevention, care and support. More information can be found at http://www.worldaidscampaign.org.

To show support for World AIDS Day, a number of social media sites have partnered with (RED) to create awareness for the cause. You don't need to be world famous to make a difference, here are ten absurdly easy ways to go red. No excuses.

By 2015, the number of babies born with HIV could be zero. A possibility we can make a reality.
