Photo by Jamie McCarthy/WireImage.com Everyone involved in last night’s Forces of Nature Benefit, hosted by the National Resources Defense Council, made the effort to green up their acts. Host Alec Baldwin claimed to have forgone the usual S.U.V. for a more eco-friendly ride—though he confessed to being trailed by three exhaust-spewing vehicles full of security personnel. And Seth Myers of Saturday Night Live took the opportunity to recycle some jokes from the show’s “Weekend Update” segment, which came prefaced by a stern warning: “Every time one of these jokes bombs, a polar bear dies.” The crowd of activists, celebrities, and donors laughed appreciatively. These are good times for the environmental movement, even if they’re lousy for everyone else. Two years ago, this event felt like a gathering of the French Resistance. This year, with Obama in the White House, the NRDC’s only fear was that it might somehow fail to capitalize on this tantalizingly opportune moment and tackle everything from climate change to landfill management. As Baldwin put it, “Even Rush Limbaugh is recycling his old arguments.” |
