Q. What actions are you taking to cope with rising gas prices? A. Not much!
This year, the folks at Kelley Blue Book asked the question, "What actions are you taking to cope with rising gas prices?" and America answered. The question is one of their regular Quick Polls to drivers nationwide, and the results of this particular one are pretty interesting. Head past the jump for the scoop. When asked the question "What actions are you taking to cope with rising gas prices?" what would your answer be? Pollsters were faced with the following series of choices:
Speaking for myself, I can answer affirmatively to several of the above, but it doesn't make me grumble any less when I do have to fill up. Perhaps that's why the poll's results are as skewed as they are. Of the 598 responders, about half (294) answered with option number one, resigned to open their wallets at the pump. Fuel efficient cars came in at a strong second with 158 votes, while 60 chose biking over driving. Surprisingly, the two options which don't require the purchase of a car or bike didn't show very well at all: only 31 voted for carpooling, and just 28 use mass transit. The remaining 27 were the telecommuters who work from a home office. Frankly, I'm surprised that there weren't more telecommuters, just because I thought more companies were going that route these days. For the commuters, the poor showing for public transportation and carpooling was pretty distressing as well. If so many people do make a daily commute to the office, why isn't carpooling or public transit more popular? I'm sorry to say that until these numbers begin to shift from resignation to innovation, we'll continue to see ever-rising prices at the pump. If you're in the "deal with it" column, stop and take a serious look at your other options! Those prices won't drop until our consumption drops, and although some people (for example the nation's legions of over-the-road drivers) truly don't have a choice, if you're a commuter, you do!
