AskPatty Reviews: AutoTex PINK Wiper Blades
AskPatty has been enjoying a partnership with AutoTex PINK for a while now, so of course when my own wipers began letting me know it was time for them to retire, I went to AutoTex PINK for my replacements. They arrived recently, and I, your dutiful blogger, installed them, and drove around with them for a bit. They were certainly put through their paces with the storms in the Southeast recently, I can tell you that. I can also tell you in all honesty that I am so impressed by the quality of these blades that I'm going back to AutoTex PINK for all my replacements. The full review is past the jump. First, a little about these blades. AutoTex PINK is the brainchild of Paula Lombard, president of Wexco Industries, a company that creates private label wiper blades for a wide range of companies. After losing someone close to her to a battle with cancer, Paula decided she wanted to give back, so she did it in the only way she knew: "Everybody needs wiper blades," she's fond of saying. Armed with an idea and a tagline ("Wipe Out Breast Cancer"), Paula created AutoTex PINK - a high quality blade emblazoned with the pink Breast Cancer ribbon, in distinctive packaging, and declared that the maximum allowable percentage from each sale would to to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the US, and to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. We always talk about "Going Pink" in October, but Paula's doing it every day, and so are her distributors. That's pretty attractive in a product like wiper blades, I say. But a good idea is only as good as the product - after all, supporting breast cancer research would get pretty old with squeaky, scrubbing wiper blades that streak and don't perform, so let's talk about the product for a moment. Upon opening the colorful package, the first thing I noticed was the the box didn't contain a folded white instruction sheet. No - the installation instructions are on the back of the box, presented in a minimalist, elegant fashion with a series of simple illustrations and no words. Inside the box were my new blades: I got the metal frame version, but the frameless blades are also available. They seem nicely constructed and the pink breast cancer ribbon stands out brightly against the black metal. Now here's a confession: I'm the girl who always opts to have my wipers changed along with an oil change, so I've never actually installed a set before - until now. True story! So, armed with my new blades and the pretty pictures on the box, I went out and tried to make sense of things. No kidding - I had more trouble getting my old blades off than I did getting these on. Once I'd successfully removed my first wiper, my (male) next door neighbor spotted me and came walking over to "rescue" me. He was very kind, and offered to help, but seemed befuddled by the AutoTex PINK blades' universal mounting system. With a quick glance at the illustrations on the box, I snatched the new blade from his hand and deftly maneuvered the new blade into place, and locked it in with a satisfying 'click'. My neighbor could only blink and say "Oh, that's how you do it." I thanked him for coming to help and we shared a laugh as I installed the second one. Once they were on, I gave them a whirl with the windshield washers - wow. Smooth, silent, and absolutely clean. In the weeks since we've enjoyed (and endured) quite a bit of rain and some harsh weather, but from the heavy rains to the light drizzles (which typically drive wiper blades nuts), these blades have been performing like champs. I was expecting them to be good, but I have to say with all honesty they're probably the best blades I've ever owned, and AutoTex PINK has a customer for life in me.
