Never let it be said that the monkeys who bang out these Open Bar columns don’t appreciate the priorities and interests of the audience here at Vanity Fair. Sure, some of you may be interested in reading about Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor’s 1996 law review article for Suffolk Law School entitled “Returning Majesty to the Law.” But probably just as many of you are interested in knowing where the federal judge evidently hung out on weekends during the summers between 1988 and 1995. The answer, we know now from the long questionnaire she submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, is the Silver Gull Club, which styles itself as “New York City’s Premiere Beach Resort.” Looking to hang there for a day? It’s $50/adult and $30/child and if you want to rent a cabana for a day it’ll cost you an extra $75 bucks. An adult seasonal membership costs $465. Betcha the place has changed significantly in the 14 years since Judge Sotomayor was last there. There’s more for the Vanity Fair social set. Last year the nominee joined a group called the Belizean Grove. What is it? The mission statement offers this: “The Belizean Grove is a constellation of influential women who are key decision makers in the profit, non-profit and social sectors; who build long term mutually beneficial relationships in order to both take charge of their own destinies and help others to do the same.” It’s the female version, in other words, of the Bohemian Club/Grove, with which readers of Vanity Fair already are familiar.
